The Chow Chow's Scowl
The Chow Chow is said to be known for three main characteristics: the blue-black tongue, the stilted gait and the scowling expression.
But what exactly is a scowling expression? What does it mean? How is it described?
Let's discover more about a Chow Chow's scowl.
What is a Scowl?
A scowl consists of a facial expression that is characterized by a furrowed brow and downturned mouth giving the impression of grim, and upset appearance. This is the description of a scowl in humans, but how about a scowl in dogs?
A scowling expression in dogs in dogs is described as giving the idea of being discerning and quite snobbish.
The Encyclopedia of K9 Terminology describes it as a "lordly expression."
This feature is typical of the Chow Chow dog breed which is by nature aloof on its own.
What Does the Breed Standard Say?
The American Kennel Club in the standard for the Chow Chow dog breed mentions the scowl.
It is described as consisting of "a marked brow with a padded button of skin just above the inner, upper corner of each eye, by sufficient play of skin to form frowning brows and a distinct furrow between the eyes beginning at the base of the muzzle and extending up the forehead; by the correct eye shape and placement and by the correct ear shape, carriage and placement."
The FCI emphasizes that the scowl should never be achieved by the presence of loose wrinkled skin of the head.
Did you know? Because Chow Chows have deep set eyes they are prone to having limited peripheral vision. It is therefore best to approach them frontally, suggests the American Kennel Club.
What Other Breeds Display a Scowl?
The Chinese Shar-Pei is also described as having a scowling expression of sullenness or disapproval.
The sunken eyes which are small and almond-shaped are just below the eye brows which creates the scowling expression.
This facial feature is said to have been selectively bred for so as to make this dog breed appear fierce.
